Supply Path Optimization (SPO) and the quality-vs-quantity strategy

In this lesson you will
  • Define SPO from both the buy side and the sell side.
  • Explain path consolidation and why more SSPs, resellers, and hops is not strictly better.
  • Reason about duplicate supply paths.

More partners feels safer, like hiring more salespeople. In supply chains it is often the opposite: each extra hop skims a fee and blurs the path. SPO is the discipline of deliberately cutting back to the cleanest routes.

Supply Path Optimization (SPO) is choosing the cleanest, shortest paths between a publisher and buyers, and pruning the rest. It is the headline use case Bidcliq Academy exists to serve, and where every earlier Track C lesson pays off.

Two sides of the same idea

  • Buy-side SPO. A DSP or advertiser reduces the number of paths it buys the same inventory through, preferring direct, transparent, low-hop paths. Lower fees, less fraud, better data. Buyers increasingly route spend toward publishers with clean ads.txt, sellers.json, and schain.
  • Sell-side SPO. A publisher reduces the number of SSPs and resellers it sells through, keeping the partners that drive incremental revenue and cutting the ones that do not.

Key idea

More SSPs, resellers, and hops is not strictly better. Each one adds fees, latency, opacity, and discrepancy risk, often without adding real incremental demand, because the same DSPs bid through multiple paths anyway. Past a point, adding partners dilutes quality without raising revenue.

Duplicate supply paths

A duplicate supply path is the same impression offered to the same DSP through several SSPs or resellers. The buyer sees the same inventory repeatedly and may bid lower, while the publisher can pay multiple fees on one piece of demand. Consolidating to the single best path captures that demand at lower cost.

Quick check

Two different SSPs both carry the same impression to the same DSP. Name one concrete downside for the publisher.

The keep / prune / investigate decision

ActionApplies to
KeepAuthorized DIRECT lines whose sellers.json resolves cleanly, with low hop depth.
PruneUnauthorized lines (no reciprocity), duplicates, and deep redundant resellers adding no incremental demand.
InvestigateUnresolved SSPs (the NEUTRAL bucket): a missing sellers.json or a real partner. Verify before cutting.

SPO is the action that moves a publisher from bloated and opaque toward lean and clean. A high Bidcliq Academy score is not a count of partners, it is a measure of clean directness, and SPO is how you raise it.

Note

Compare ranks many publishers on the quadrant at once. From a single audit you can write a one-page SPO memo: for each partner, keep / prune / investigate, each backed by the metric that justifies it.

To really lock this in: build an SPO recommendation for a real publisher from its Bidcliq Academy audit: keep, prune, or investigate, each backed by the metric.
